Datuk Dr. Amar Singh HSS



Senior Consultant Community Paediatrician 

Dr. Amar-Singh HSS is the head of the Paediatric Department and Clinical Research Centre at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun in Ipoh. A recipient of the Outstanding Asian Paediatrician Award in 2012, he is also the president of the National Early Childhood Intervention Council.

A graduate from the University of Malaya, Dr. Amar-Singh later obtained his MRCP in 1988 and subsequently a FRCP in 2000. He also holds a Masters in Community Paediatrics from the University of London, whereupon he successfully achieved a distinction in his studies. He also holds a Certificate in Theology which was awarded in Moore Theological College in Sydney, Australia.

Dr. Amar is a recipient of the SENIA Advocacy Award in 2016, which is a prime reflection of his passionate work with people with disabilities. He has pioneered and mobilized registered associations for people with disabilities, including the National Early Childhoood Intervention Council (NECIC), the Association of the Network for the Needs of Children with Disabilities and Pertubuhan Ibu Bapa Kanak-kanak Keperluan Istimewa Sarawak. He has also initiated informal family support groups for various disabilities including Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

His many contributions to healthcare in Malaysia includes introducing developmental screening routinely for children. He also established the first Paediatric and Neonatal Retrieval Service in 2000. He was involved in developing the national perinatal mortality reporting system to identify, classify and investigate perinatal deaths in Malaysia.

A medical education enthusiast, he assisted in developing the CPD (Contrinuous Professional Development) programme for the Ministry of Health. He is also a MRCPCH examiner with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Amar has penned columns in a variety of news prints, on topics ranging from education, health and family. When not involved in medical work, Dr. Amar-Singh enjoys bird-watching, a hobby he has committed to for 30 years.
